Summer Safety Tips for Young Children

Summer brings sunshine, outdoor play, and lots of fun, but it’s also important to keep safety in mind while children enjoy the season. Whether they’re at the park, the pool, or just playing outside, here are some essential summer safety tips for families with young children.

Summer Safety Tips for Young Children

Stay Sun Safe

The sun can be strong, even on cloudy days. Make sure your child wears:

  • A wide-brimmed hat.

  • Lightweight, protective clothing.

  • Child-safe sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) reapplied every 2 hours.

  • Sunglasses for eye protection.

Stay Sun Safe

Hydration is Key

Children need plenty of fluids when playing outside. Offer water often—even before they ask. Avoid sugary drinks and keep water bottles within easy reach during outdoor play.

Watch for Signs of Heat

Keep outdoor play short on very hot days. If children seem unusually tired, flushed, or sweaty, bring them inside to cool down. Try outdoor play in the morning or evening when temperatures are lower.

Water Play with Supervision

Never leave children unattended near water, even small kiddie pools. Always supervise closely during water play and teach basic water safety from a young age.

Check Playground Equipment

Before letting children play, touch playground equipment to ensure it’s not too hot. Slides and metal surfaces can heat up quickly in the sun and cause burns.

Bug Safety

Use child-safe insect repellent when needed, especially in areas with mosquitoes or ticks. Check your child’s skin and clothing after outdoor time.

Proper Footwear

Protect little feet with closed-toe shoes during playtime, especially at parks, to prevent scrapes and stubbed toes.
