Summer is a great time to build lasting family memories. With the longer days and warmer weather, the great outdoors offers many fun things to do together. Here are five family-friendly summer activities to enjoy.
1) Visit your local recreation center or library
Your local rec center or library can be a one-stop shop for summer fun. Most recreation centers offer day programs for children, which include activities like art, sports, dance, swimming, and other forms of physical activity. The Katy Library offers weekly storytime at all branches for children ages 3-5, and some locations have storytime for infants, toddlers, and school-age children.
2) Shop the farmers market
Not only is a farmers market an ideal place to get some of your everyday groceries, it can be a fun learning experience for your child. Ask your child to help you choose the freshest fruits and veggies, or encourage their creativity by asking them to pick the ingredients for that night’s dinner. Because vendors at the farmers market are more than happy to help educate your child about what they do, your child can learn more about where their food comes from.

3) Make a DIY obstacle course with household items
An age-appropriate obstacle course is a great way to help your child develop fine motor skills (activities that promote balance and dexterity) and gross motor skills (activities such as climbing, jumping, and running). The good news is, you can make one using simple and inexpensive items. For example, your child can jump over couch cushions, crawl under chairs, and dodge water balloons.
4) Go backyard camping
Even if your family enjoys more traditional camping, backyard camping can be a fun way to spend time outdoors without having to travel far from home. To enhance your camping experience, you can pack a cooler with food and drinks, and agree to go inside only if it’s absolutely necessary. As always, don’t forget the sunscreen and bug spray.
5) Take day trips
Short day trips are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to enjoy some summer family fun. Some family-friendly day trip ideas include: going to the splash pad, visiting your local zoo, picking berries, having a picnic in the park, and a day at a children’s museum. Choose a destination that offers family-friendly activities and restaurants, and keep travel time within your child’s limits.
The longer days of summer are full of opportunities to help your child have fun, learn new things, keep active, and explore their community. These family-friendly summer activities will create lasting memories for everyone.
