All About Kindergarten Readiness

Is your child ready for kindergarten? In Katy, the minimum requirement is residence in the Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD), and to be five years of age on or before September 1 of the current school year.

Katy ISD has also identified a few additional factors that go into kindergarten readiness. These include:

• School readiness such as your child being able to write their first name, identify colors and some letter names and sounds, and counting to 10.

• Social readiness such as your child being able to follow simple directions, share, and take turns.

• Physical readiness such as your child being able to properly hold and use a pencil or crayon, eat independently, and use the restroom independently.

Pre-kindergarten programs support kindergarten readiness

At MyPlace, we offer a Katy pre-K program to help your child learn the basic skills to help them prepare for their kindergarten journey. Our pre-K program will improve children's problem-solving, reading, writing, cognitive, creativity, physical wellness, and communication skills. Science, mathematics, and hands-on learning activities are also introduced in this program.

Our pre-K program builds social emotional skills like playing make-believe, comforting others, and avoiding danger; language and communication skills like forming full sentences, talking about their day, and answering simple questions; cognitive skills like learning colors, and understanding three or more parts of the body; and physical development like catching a large ball most of the time, using buttons, and holding a crayon or pencil properly.

All children develop in different ways. MyPlace’s Kinder Bridge program for the Katy area is uniquely designed for children who need another year of instruction and learning before kindergarten. Students can take advantage of learning in a small group, with a more challenging curriculum designed to prepare them for kindergarten.
