Kid-Friendly Valentine’s Day Projects

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – what better reason to help your child express their creativity? Try these three Valentine’s Day crafts with your child. They can be used to decorate your home, or given as thoughtful gifts to family and friends.

Tissue Paper Heart Collage

These tissue paper hearts can be displayed in a window so the sunlight can show off the bright colors.

Materials

  1. Construction paper in red or white

  2. Colorful tissue paper

  3. Clear contact paper

  4. Glue stick

  5. Child-safe scissors

Instructions

  1. Help your child tear or cut large strips of the tissue paper.

  2. Fold a sheet of construction paper in half. Draw half of a heart, with the ends facing towards your fold.

  3. Approximately one inch inside of this half-heart shape, draw another half of a heart.

  4. Cut along both lines. Once you unfold the paper, you’ll have a heart-shaped border.

  5. Place this border on the sheet of contact paper.

  6. Attach the tissue paper pieces to the contact paper within the heart shape.

  7. Trim the excess contact paper around the heart border.

Heart Stamp

This heart stamp Valentine’s Day craft is easy and inexpensive, and is an ideal way to decorate cards, letters, and envelopes.

Materials

  1. Small cardboard tube

  2. Red washable child-safe paint

  3. Thick paper

  4. Scotch tape

  5. Paper plate

Instructions

  1. Flatten the cardboard tube, then press one of the creases towards the inside of the tube. This will create a heart shape. You can use Scotch tape to keep the heart shape in place if necessary.

  2. Pour out a small amount of paint onto the paper plate.

  3. Dip one end of the roll into the paint, and demonstrate.

If you have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, you can use it to create a potato stamp as an alternative to a cardboard tube. Since sharp tools are used to create the stamp, an adult should do it. To make this version of the stamp, cut a potato in half, gently push the cookie cutter into the center, and pull it out again. Then, cut away the potato outside of the outline until the heart shape is revealed. Be sure the potato is dry before stamping.

Yarn Hearts

This yarn heart craft is easy and fun to create. It’s also a great opportunity to help your child develop their fine motor skills.

Materials

  1. Cardboard

  2. Pink or red yarn

  3. Scotch tape

Instructions

  1. Cut out a heart shape from a piece of cardboard, ensuring it’s not too small for your child to easily hold and maneuver.

  2. Tape one end of the yarn to the back of the cardboard.

  3. Show your child how to wind the yarn around the cardboard heart, covering the entire surface.

  4. When you’re finished, cut the other end of the yarn and tuck it in the yarn in the back.
