Progressive Coding for Children in Preschool and Pre-K

At My Place, we believe in progressive coding as a key part of our STEAM curriculum. We introduce progressive coding for preschool and pre-K, and we start as early as our Toddlers program. Studies show that progressive coding teaches skills for future success. It helps strengthen skills in math, reading, spelling, and problem-solving. When kids learn how to write code, they not only develop cognitive skills, but also learn the problem-solving process.

We believe that technology is a learning tool. My Place’s unique progressive coding program introduces fundamentals of coding: learners develop patterns using colors, tiles, and figures to program their technology.

This process involves using pattern recognition to present the problems in different ways, while logically breaking them down into parts and creating the steps needed to solve them.

At My Place, some of the tools we use to supplement our STEAM technology education are:

1. Root, a robot that drives and moves according to drawn and erased lines

2. Fisher-Price®Think & Learn Code-a-pillar Twist™, a preschooler-friendly toy that allows children to program a route for the caterpillar by twisting dials

3. Qobo, a robot that glows, moves, sings, and dances according to puzzle cards recognized by a reader underneath the robot

4. Ozobot, which can be programmed to follow patterns on a surface.
