The Benefits of Teaching Progressive Coding to Kids

At My Place, we make STEAM programs part of our everyday curriculum. Progressive coding is just one of the technology-related activities we teach to all of our children.

What is progressive coding?

Progressive coding introduces fundamental coding concepts and then builds on those skills with increasingly complex activities. The progressive coding process involves using pattern recognition to show problems in different ways, while breaking them down into logical parts, and creating the necessary steps to solve these problems.

These are some of the ways we build progressive coding into our education at My Place:

• Root, a robot that drives and moves according to drawn and erased lines • Fisher-Price® Think & Learn Code-a-pillar Twist™, a preschooler-friendly toy that lets kids program a route for the caterpillar by twisting dials • Qobo, a robot that glows, moves, sings, and dances according to puzzle cards recognized by a reader underneath the robot • Ozobot, which can be programmed to follow patterns on a surface.

Benefits of teaching progressive coding to children

Technology makes our world run – from our smartphones to our appliances to our jobs. It’s part of everyday life. Teaching coding from an early age helps to prepare children to successfully navigate their world and build strong foundations for their future career and daily life.

Studies show that progressive coding teaches skills for future success. It also helps to develop the following skills:

• Math • Reading • Spelling • Problem-solving • Resilience • Creativity • Planning • Organizing

At My Place Early Learning Center, we provide a trend-setting progressive coding curriculum that allows your child to learn through playing. Students will learn the basic foundation of coding through patterns, colors, and sequencing. We’re proud to offer STEAM programs and technology as early as our Toddler program.

Why teach progressive coding in preschool and Pre-K?

At My Place, we believe progressive coding gives children a head start for the future. Our educational programs prepare our students to successfully navigate their world with progressive coding.

Progressive coding involves using pattern recognition to present the problems in different ways while logically breaking them down into parts and creating the steps needed to solve them.

Studies show that progressive coding strengthens skills in math, reading, spelling, and problem-solving.

Ways to teach progressive coding in preschool and Pre-K

At My Place, some of our progressive coding toys that offer hands-on STEAM and technology education are:

  1. Root, a robot that drives and moves according to drawn and erased lines

  2. Fisher-Price®Think & Learn Code-a-pillar Twist™, a preschooler-friendly toy that allows children to program a route for the caterpillar by twisting dials

  3. Qobo, a robot that glows, moves, sings, and dances according to puzzle cards recognized by a reader underneath the robot

  4. Ozobot, which can be programmed to follow patterns on a surface.
